Government College University Faisalabad is hosting the HEC Intervarsity Hockey Men (Zone-I) Championship 2025-26, bringing together leading universities of the region in a spirit of healthy competition and sportsmanship.

Five teams are participating in the championship, including the University of Sargodha, University of Agriculture Faisalabad, Thal University Bhakkar, The University of Faisalabad, and Government College University Faisalabad.

The opening ceremony of the championship was held at Hockey Stadium, Madina Town, Faisalabad. Vice Chancellor GCUF, Prof. Dr. Rauf-i-Azam, formally inaugurated the event along with Chairman Sports Board Prof. Dr. Nasir Amin.

Speaking on the occasion, the Vice Chancellor said that hockey is the national sport of Pakistan and the nation must work hard to regain its lost glory at the international level. He said Pakistani youth possess immense talent and only need quality coaching and modern sports facilities to excel in the game.
Following the opening ceremony, the first match of the tournament was played between the University of Sargodha and the University of Agriculture Faisalabad.

University officials said that the championship aims to promote sports culture, teamwork, and healthy activities among students while providing a valuable platform for emerging hockey talent. They added that such sporting events help strengthen inter-university relations and encourage students to participate in positive extracurricular activities alongside their academic pursuits.
